The Smart SustainChemE is an innovative joint Master’s programme in sustainable chemical engineering designed to address critical challenges in the chemical industry by advancing sustainability and integrating cutting-edge digital technologies. Aligned with EU policies such as the Green Deal and Digital Strategy, this initiative fosters the transition to a sustainable industrial future. Jointly designed by a consortium of four leading European universities—Université de Lorraine (UL-FR), Technical University of Crete (TUC-GR), Slovak University of Technology (STU-SK), and Hasselt University (UH-BE)—in association with the computer engineering department of La Sapienza University (IT), the programme blends over 2 years (120 ECTS) academic excellence with a global sustainability vision for chemical engineering. Supported by European industrial and research partners, the program aims to educate chemical engineering graduates with the skills to develop sustainable processes and products while leveraging digitalisation, AI, and innovation for process optimisation. A key feature of the programme is its specialisation track, in Semester 3 which allows students to deepen their expertise in one of 3 advanced domains: Smart Cybernetics for Chemical Engineers (STU), Sustainable Packaging and Advanced Materials (UH), Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Process and Product Design (UL). Students begin at UL for foundational training and move to TUC for environmental and chemical engineering. Then they specialise before completing a research or industry internship. The programme promotes intercultural learning and professional development through international mobility, enabling them to earn a multiple Master’s degree. By merging advanced education, interdisciplinary expertise, and real-world industry engagement, Smart SustainChemE prepares the next generation of chemical engineers to drive the transition toward a sustainable and digitally advanced future.
