We give some concrete examples of how concepts from multivariable control can be applied in the chemical industry. All examples are using “elementary” concepts, such as cascade control, ratio control, feedforward etc. Furthermore we discuss some aspects of PID-controller tuning not often mentioned in textbooks.

Krister Forsman got his PhD from Linköping University, on the topic of constructive commutative algebra in nonlinear systems analysis. He worked for ABB between 1994 and 2003, mainly with paper machine control. In 2005 he was employed as process control specialist by Perstorp Specialty Chemicals, and since 2012 he is also adjunct professor in process control at Chemical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
