The article discusses design of mathematical model of an industrial scale tubular chemical reactor. Properties of the reactor in steady-state are given and analyzed. The choice of controlled variable is discussed and it is related to dynamical properties of the reactor. The controller used is based on adaptive Generalized Predictive Control algorithm. Rederivation of the control algorithm leads to simple formulae for its calculation. Control results show computational attractivity of this approach and demonstrate the possibility of successful control of a complex nonlinear chemical process.
