Application deadline: September 30, 2017.

Project description: The aim of the project is to apply machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to synthesize control systems composed of three components: an inference mechanism, a process model, and a control strategy. The task of the inference mechanism is to deduce values of unmeasured parameters and process values from known measured signals. Subsequently, the inferred values are utilized by the process model to predict the future evolution of the controlled plant. Finally, the aim of the control strategy is to deduce optimal control actions based on the process model. The implementation of these blocks will be based on, respectively, machine learning techniques (SVM, PCA, etc.), deep neural networks, and model predictive control. The objective of the project is to extend existing machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to systems that combine continuous dynamics with discrete logic (known as hybrid systems), to combine the methods in a systematic manner, and to implement developed algorithms in the form of open-source software packages.

About the group: Research in our group focuses on the development of control strategies for complex cyber-physical systems. Our mission is to create control algorithms that have low implementation requirements and can thus be employed in real-life scenarios without the need of a costly hardware upgrade. Our research is motivated by applications in process control, robotics, and electrical/mechanical/chemical engineering. We offer a large freedom for own research ideas and solutions, well-equipped offices and laboratories, and state-of-the-art IT facilities at the best technical faculty in Slovakia.

Requirements:
  • PhD degree in control, optimization, computer science, or a related field, awarded not more than 3 years ago,
  • good command of numerical optimization, machine learning (SVM, PCA), and artificial intelligence (deep neural networks) algorithms,
  • solid Matlab and/or Python programming skills,
  • ability to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out research tasks,
  • communication skills and a flexible approach in tackling a wide variety of tasks,
  • decent publication record.
Note that knowledge of the Slovak language is not required. The working language in our group is English. The position adheres to the European and the beneficiaries policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. It is an objective to increase the number of females in scientific positions. Female applicants are therefore encouraged to apply.

How to apply: Applicants are required to submit following documents by email to michal.kvasnica@stuba.sk by September 30, 2017:
  • CV,
  • list of publications,
  • statement of research interests and career goals,
  • contact details for at least one referee.
